A 10-day signee, Clay hit .177 (26-147) in 38 games as a George Fox junior, with eight RBIs. He  hit .234 (30-128) in 39 games at GFU in 2014, his first season there after transferring from the University of Portland, where he hit .333 (3-9) in seven games as a UP freshman.

At Gresham High School, he was second-team all-state as a senior and a two-time Mt. Hood Conference all-star as an infielder and once as a pitcher.
