Three first-inning runs helped the Gateway Grizzlies (29-25) to a 5-1 win over the Joliet Slammers (23-31) at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday.

Jerod Yakubik racked up two RBIs on one hit for the Gateway Grizzlies. He tripled in the first inning.

Max Whieldon picked up the win for the Gateway Grizzlies. Whieldon allowed one earned run, six hits and one walk while striking out two over seven innings of work.

Jim Schult was charged with his fourth loss of the year. He lasted just six innings, walked three, struck out four, and allowed five runs.
