A great effort by Steven Maxwell led the Joliet Slammers (2-5) to a 4-1 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums (4-2) on Thursday at Silver Cross Field.
The Joliet Slammers got the win thanks in large part to Maxwell's dominant, 10-strikeout performance. The Joliet Slammers' pitcher gave up just three hits over seven shutout innings.
Bennett Whitmore couldn't get it done on the mound for the Traverse City Beach Bums, taking a loss. He lasted just seven innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed four runs.
The game was never in doubt after the first, as the Joliet Slammers scored one run on an RBI double by Hector Pellot.
The Joliet Slammers increased their lead with two runs in the fifth. A fielder's choice scored Ben Hewett to start the scoring in the inning. That was followed up by Kyle Maunus' double, bringing home Erik Lis.
The Traverse City Beach Bums' lone run of the ballgame came in the ninth inning on a groundout by Jeff Flagg.
