An 11-run explosion in the fifth inning hoisted the Newport Gulls (27-10) to a 14-6 win over the New Bedford Bay Sox at Cardines Field on Friday.
Joel McKeithan had a busy day at the plate, collecting three extra-base hits. He homered in the second inning and doubled in the fifth innings.
Ryan Pennell had an impressive outing against the New Bedford Bay Sox (25-15)'s lineup. Pennell held the New Bedford Bay Sox hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three.
Andy Lalli went a perfect 3-3 at the plate for the New Bedford Bay Sox. He singled in the second, third, and seventh innings.
Tanner Chleborad recorded his third win of the year for the Newport Gulls. He allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings. Chleborad struck out two, walked one and gave up three hits.
Sean Fitzgerald ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his fourth loss of the year. He allowed nine runs in four innings, walked one and struck out six.
The Newport Gulls easily handled the New Bedford Bay Sox pitching as six hitters combined for 16 hits, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
