Matt Pare clubbed two home runs to carry the Newport Gulls (18-5) to a 10-7 win over the Mystic Schooners (3-21) at Fitch High School in 10 innings.
The game was back-and-forth heading into the tenth, with six lead changes.
Michael Johnson put together a nice outing. Johnson gave up just one hit, allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out four during his three innings of work.
Caleb Kellogg improved to 1-0 on the year by picking up the win for the Newport Gulls. He allowed two runs over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out four, walked two and surrendered three hits.
Jose Lopez (1-2) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just one inning, walked one, struck out two, and allowed three runs.
Jeff Melillo, Pare and Yale Rosen helped lead the Newport Gulls. They combined for six hits and nine RBIs.
