The Vienna River Dogs (9-8) built an early lead against the Gaithersburg Giants (6-15), scoring three runs in the first inning, en route to a 6-2 win on Tuesday at James Madison High School.
A three-run home run by Shaun Wood delivered the runs in the first. The Vienna River Dogs had four hits in the inning.
Wood racked up three RBIs on one hit for the Vienna River Dogs.
Mark Gunst racked up seven strikeouts in the the Vienna River Dogs win. Gunst allowed one earned run, eight hits and no walks over seven innings.
It was a good day at the plate for the Gaithersburg Giants' John Drexel. Drexel went 3-4 and scored one run. He singled in the third, fifth, and ninth innings.
Chad Diehl (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just five innings, walked none, struck out five, and allowed four runs.
