The Garden City Wind cruise past the Las Vegas Train Robbers, 8-2

In another night of dominant pitching, the Garden City Wind (11-32) took game four of the series against the Las Vegas Train Robbers (18-23) 8-2 Friday night at Clint Lightner Stadium.


The seventh inning was quite the show for the Wind, starting with a single by Albert Gonzalez and a double by Shea Bell. Gonzalez on a single up the middle by Chris Cruz who continues to be red-hot for the Wind.


Bell saw a golden opportunity to steal home and scored with relief pitcher Brandon Hudson up to bat.


The game began with equal excitement as Edgar Munoz started things off with a first-pitch double to right center. He stole third then crossed home plate on a single from Bell to take an early lead after one inning.


A three-run third inning gave Garden City the insurance they were looking for, extending the lead 4-0. With two outs, Munoz hit a single and stole second for the second time. Gonzalez and Bell followed suit with singles of their own. Munoz scored on Gonzalez’s hit to left.


By the Las Vegas catcher’s interference, Cody Ellis reached first to load the bases for Chris Cruz. Picking up two RBIs, Cruz brought Gonzalez and Bell home.


Effective on the mound and at the plate, Gabe Cook sent the ball down the right field line in the fourth for a triple. Ariel Adut brought Cook home with a putout to the Las Vegas shortstop.


Adut kept the Train Robbers from scoring in the sixth with a stunning catch in left as the bases were loaded. The runner at third went for home without realizing Adut caught the ball and was was tossed out for the double play.


Cook (3-3) finished the night giving up just one run and four hits in six innings. He dished out four strikeouts and allowed three walks as he recorded his third win of the season.


Hudson and Matt Eshleman entered the game in relief before Danny Barnes closed the door on the Train Robbers. Hudson gave up one run and two hits with a strikeout while Eshleman and Barnes kept Las Vegas from adding to their score.


Munoz had an incredible night going four-for-five on the night with four stolen bases and scoring twice. He and Cruz have been major additions to the team as Cruz went three-for-four. All hits were singles for Cruz, who recorded three RBIs.


Bell had a great night as well as he went three-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI in addition to his brilliant base running to steal home.


Taking the loss for Las Vegas was Casey Hood (3-5) as he gave up seven runs and 13 hits, though he struck out seven.

 

The win for Garden City tied up the series 2-2. Game five will start at 6:30 Saturday at Clint Lightner Stadium.
