Matt Burgess had two extra base hits, helping the Hannibal Cavemen (5-3) to a 4-3 victory over the Richmond RiverRats (2-7) on Thursday at McBride Stadium.
He homered in the second inning, singled in the third inning, and doubled in the eighth inning.The Richmond RiverRats couldn't get anything going as long as Justin Hertzmann was pitching. Hertzmann held the Richmond RiverRats hitless over 2 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four.
Michael Paez was hot from the plate for the Richmond RiverRats. Paez went 3-4, drove in one and scored one run. He singled in the first and second innings and doubled in the fourth inning.
Reed Evans ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just four innings, walked two, struck out two, and allowed two runs.
The Hannibal Cavemen's Burgess, Brandon Bentson and Brett Marr combined for seven hits and two RBIs.
