The Newport drub the Nine, 10-4

The Nine (1-3) didn't have a chance on Monday, as the Newport (2-2) won in blowout fashion, 10-4 at Cardines Field.

The Newport scored four runs in the third on an RBI single by Bill Bergan, an RBI single by Eddie Apice, an RBI double by Mike Melillo, and a sacrifice fly by Jeff Melillo.

Melillo racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Newport.

The Nine had no answer for Brian Baker, who kept runners off the basepaths in his appearance. Baker held the Nine hitless over four innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four.

Andrew Smiley brought the heat against the Newport during his outing. The Newport managed just one hit off of the the Nine's pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four during his three innings of work.

Frank Holbrook got the win, running his season record to 1-1. He allowed four runs over five innings. Holbrook struck out seven, walked one and gave up eight hits.

Rob Rushton ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his first loss of the year. He allowed eight runs in four innings, walked one and struck out two.
