Jonathan Gonzalez was cold coming off the bench, but Gonzalez warmed up quickly as Gonzalez stroked a key pinch-hit double in the seven to lead the Joliet Slammers (26-32) to a 10-7 win over the Florence Freedom (33-25) on Thursday at UCMC Stadium.
With the Joliet Slammers trailing by three in the seventh inning, Gonzalez came to the plate and doubled, plating Grant DeBruin, Ben Hewett and Jerod Yakubik.
Nick Akins blasted two home runs for the Joliet Slammers. Akins went 2-5 in the game with four RBIs and two runs scored. Akins homered in the fourth and ninth innings.
The Florence Freedom couldn't get anything going as long as Lucas Goodgion was on the mound. The Florence Freedom managed just one hit off of Goodgion, who allowed no earned runs, walked three and struck out three during his 2 2/3 innings of work.
Gonzalez got the win, running his season record to 1-1. He allowed one run over 1 2/3 innings. He struck out two, walked none and surrendered one hit.
Brandon Mathes was charged with his fifth loss of the year. He lasted just one inning, walked two, struck out one, and allowed four runs.
