An outstanding effort by Pete Kelich led the Newport Gulls (4-1) to an 18-1 win over the Sanford Mainers (1-2) on Sunday at Cardines Field.
Kelich struck out 10 hitters en route to the the Newport Gulls win. The Newport Gulls' pitcher tossed six innings of shutout ball and allowed only three hits.
Austin Slater rocked the Sanford Mainers with two home runs. Slater went 3-4 in the game with three RBIs and three runs scored. Slater homered in the fifth and seventh innings.
The Newport Gulls ran up the score, scoring runs at will until the final out. The Newport Gulls scored nine runs in the final three innings to cap the blowout win. The Newport Gulls scored five runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Conor Keniry, an RBI single by John Norwood, an RBI single by Charlie White, an RBI single by Kasey Coffman, and a hit by pitch.
Tripp Davis couldn't get it done on the bump for the Sanford Mainers, taking a loss. He allowed seven runs in four innings, walked two and struck out five.
The Newport Gulls easily handled the Sanford Mainers pitching as eight hitters combined for 19 hits, 15 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
