The SYR JR Chiefs make the most of 8 hits in 7-6 victory over the SYR Salt Cats

The SYR JR Chiefs (2-0) and the SYR Salt Cats (0-2) each put runners in scoring position on Sunday, but the SYR JR Chiefs capitalized on more RBI opportunities, pulling out a 7-6 win at Hopkins Road Park.

The SYR JR Chiefs would not relinquish the lead as the SYR Salt Cats were unable to weather a four-run fourth inning deficit.

The SYR Salt Cats scored on an RBI triple by Eddie Charles and a sacrifice fly by Dan Fiorito in the fifth inning, a groundout by Fiorito in the seventh inning, and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Bailey and an RBI single by Bud Morton in the ninth inning. Still, the SYR Salt Cats couldn't catch the SYR JR Chiefs.

Charles had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits.

Ethan Striz got the win, running his season record to 1-0. He allowed three runs over six innings. He struck out four, walked three and surrendered seven hits.

Sean Williams couldn't get it done on the bump for the SYR Salt Cats, taking a loss. He allowed seven runs in 7 2/3 innings, walked six and struck out six.
