Ronnie Gaines was the first player signed by Colts manager Doc Edwards for the 2011 season. "We’ll have a lot of great guys back and I think 2011 is the year to win it all”, said Gaines. Ronnie was named the Holland Jewelers Team MVP for the 2010 season. Gaines, San Angelo’s own “Mr. Baseball,” is former Angelo State standout and was named a Colts Captain for the first time last season. He will resume his previous roles in a San Angelo Colts uniform upon his return this year as both the Colts Captain again and starting center fielder. Ronnie will begin his sixth year as a pro and fifth season with the Colts, almost half the life of the Colts franchise, which enters it 12th year overall. Gaines also begins the 2011 with 65 career stolen bases with San Angelo, three stolen bases short of the franchise record. Gaines first joined the team at the end of 2006 for seven games, after finishing his senior year at ASU when he hit .417 and led the team with nine homers, 59 RBIs, on-base percentage (.504) and even pitched for the Rams. With his rookie status still in tact for 2007, Gaines had a great season his first full year in pro ball, hitting .334, with 19 home runs, 53 RBIs and 29 stolen bases, on his way to winning the United League Baseball Rookie-of-the-Year Award. His performance also earned him a trip to affiliated baseball in 2008, when he was signed by the White Sox organization. Ronnie returned to the Colts the following season in 2009 and last season he was one of the clubs best offensive stars in 2010, hitting .330, with 10 homeruns, a career high 71 RBIs, 21 stolen bases and was amongst the ULB batting leaders in over half a dozen categories. Gaines is not just a fan favorite because of his time of service with the Colts, but Gaines is a spectacular centerfielder who makes acrobatic catches in the outfield with great range and possess a cannon for an arm. His fielding wows crowds every game and is amongst the elite on any level.
