The Gary SouthShore built an early edge on Saturday, but the Newark (9-13) roared back to steal a 6-4 victory at Gary, Ind. (U.S. Steel Yard).
While the Gary SouthShore led until the eighth inning, the Newark worked their way back and took the lead on a two-run single by Courtney Billingslea.
Juan Martinez was solid at the plate for the Newark. Martinez went 3-5, drove in one and scored two runs. He homered in the first inning and singled in the sixth and ninth innings.
A bright spot for the Gary SouthShore in the defeat was Stephen Hiscock, who allowed only two runs while striking out eight.
Matt Lyons got the win, running his season record to 1-0. He struck out one, walked one and surrendered no hits.
Chris Allen was charged with the loss. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, walked none, struck out one, and allowed four runs.
