A five-run explosion in the first inning hoisted the Medicine Hat Mavericks (14-6) to a 9-1 win over the Okotoks Dawgs (11-7) at Seaman Stadium on Thursday.

Joel Lutz racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Medicine Hat Mavericks. He singled in the first and second innings and doubled in the eighth inning.

Levi Westerlund picked up the win for the Medicine Hat Mavericks. Westerlund allowed one earned run, four hits and one walk while striking out four over seven innings of work.

Ryan Rogers ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his second loss of the year. He allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings, walked two and struck out two.
