The Quincy Gems survive the Terre Haute Rex rally, escape with 4-3 victory

The Terre Haute Rex (4-1) were never able to get over the hump and get over their troubles against the Quincy Gems (5-0) on Tuesday, as the Terre Haute Rex fell 4-3 at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stad after falling behind by three runs in the eighth inning.

The Terre Haute Rex scored two runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Owen Conway. Despite their efforts, the Terre Haute Rex couldn't get over the hump.

Caleb Howell paced the Quincy Gems at the plate. Howell went 3-5 and scored one run. He singled in the first, fifth, and sixth innings.

Joseph Mortillaro pitched lights out for the Quincy Gems. Mortillaro held the Terre Haute Rex hitless over 1 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two.

A bright spot for the Terre Haute Rex in the defeat was Kurt Kudrecki, who allowed only one run while striking out eight.

Austin Klein improved to 1-0 on the year by picking up the win for the Quincy Gems. He allowed one run over five innings. Klein struck out three, walked one and gave up five hits.

Josh Dove (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just two innings, walked none, struck out none, and allowed two runs.
