Acevedo began his career at Bethune-Cookman University as purely a hitter, hitting .250 his freshman year and .288 his sophomore season before becoming both a hitter and a pitcher the next two seasons. His senior year was his best season as it all came together both on the mound (2.63 ERA in 41 innings) and at the plate (.321 batting average in 112 at bats.) The Slammers selected Acevedo in the second round of the 2013 Frontier League draft as a pitcher.
