The Madison Mallards survive the Eau Claire Express 5-3 thanks to Verdi's late-game heroics

Tom Verdi drove in the winning run to give the Madison Mallards (19-19) the lead in the seventh inning, as the Madison Mallards hung on to beat the Eau Claire Express (11-26) 5-3 on Saturday.

Taylor Gushue reached on an error to start the seventh. He then went from first to second on a groundout by John Welborn. Finally, Verdi came to the plate with the score tied at one in the seventh inning, and singled, scoring Gushue.

The Madison Mallards held off the Eau Claire Express, as the Eau Claire Express were unable to overcome a four-run eighth inning deficit.

The Eau Claire Express scored two runs in the ninth on an RBI double by Alex Real and an RBI triple by Tim Zier. Despite their efforts, the Eau Claire Express couldn't get over the hump.

The Madison Mallards' Luis Munoz was perfect at the dish, going 2-2. He singled in the fifth and seventh innings.

Justin Topa improved to 1-1 on the year by picking up the win for the Madison Mallards. He allowed two runs over 2 2/3 innings. Topa struck out three, walked one and gave up five hits.

Andrew Hedrick ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his third loss of the year. He lasted just seven innings, walked three, struck out one, and allowed two runs.
