Sanford Mainers vs Newport Gulls: 10-12

DeLeon stars as the Newport Gulls defeat the Sanford Mainers, 12-10

A magnificent effort by Alex DeLeon carried the Newport Gulls (10-4) to a 12-10 win over the Sanford Mainers (4-11) on Friday at Cardines Field.

DeLeon rocked the Sanford Mainers with two home runs. DeLeon went 2-4 in the game with four RBIs and two runs scored. DeLeon homered in the second and fourth innings.

Both squads had things going at the plate, tallying 22 runs and 26 hits, including zero extra base hits. Both bullpens were busy with eight pitchers used in the game as the skippers of both squads tried to finish it off.

The Newport Gulls would not relinquish the lead as the Sanford Mainers were unable to weather a five-run second inning deficit.

The Sanford Mainers scored on a three-run home run by Jordan Hagel and an RBI single by Anthony Hajjar in the third inning, a solo home run by Jordan Betts and an RBI single by Brett Armour in the fifth inning, and a solo home run by Armour and a two-run double by Betts in the eighth inning. Unfortunately, the Sanford Mainers weren't able to take the lead back.

Ryan Halstead recorded his first win of the year for the Newport Gulls. He allowed two runs over four innings. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered five hits.

Tripp Davis couldn't get it done on the mound for the Sanford Mainers, taking a loss. He allowed eight runs in three innings, walked five and struck out four.
