Alex DeLeon brought home the go-ahead run to give the Newport Gulls (1-0) the lead in the eighth inning, as the Newport Gulls hung on to beat the Mystic Schooners (0-2) 4-1 on Saturday.

With the Newport Gulls trailing by one, DeLeon came to the plate and homered, bringing home Blake Butera.

DeLeon put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Newport Gulls. He doubled in the third inning and homered in the eighth inning.

Brett Winger racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Newport Gulls. He singled in the second and seventh innings and homered in the ninth inning.

The Mystic Schooners couldn't get anything going so long as Mitch Horacek was on the hill. Horacek held the Mystic Schooners hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three.

Reed Athnes went a perfect 3-3 at the dish for the Mystic Schooners. He doubled in the fifth inning and singled in the third and seventh innings.

Daniel Wright got the win, running his season record to 1-0. He allowed one run over seven innings. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered seven hits.

Alex Gouin was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just two innings, walked none, struck out four, and allowed two runs.
