Jeff Melillo went 2-4 as the Newport Gulls (14-4) took home a 5-2 victory over the New Bedford Bay Sox (13-8) at Paul Walsh Field on Tuesday.
He doubled in the third inning and singled in the fifth inning.Ryan Halstead put together a nice outing. Halstead held the New Bedford Bay Sox hitless over 2 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five.
A bright spot for the New Bedford Bay Sox in the defeat was Jonathan Messad, who allowed only two runs while striking out six.
Evan King got on base three times in the game for the New Bedford Bay Sox. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the third inning.
Pete Kelich recorded his first win of the year for the Newport Gulls. He allowed two runs over six innings. Kelich struck out four, walked four and gave up six hits.
Sean Fitzgerald was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just five innings, walked three, struck out seven, and allowed three runs.
