Grant Williams went 2-4, sparking the West Virginia Miners (3-1) to a 5-2 victory over the Butler Blue Sox (3-1) on Friday at Pullman Park.
He doubled in the third inning and singled in the seventh inning.The Butler Blue Sox had no answer for Russell Luxton, who kept runners off the basepaths in his appearance. Luxton held the Butler Blue Sox hitless over 3 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two.
A bright spot for the Butler Blue Sox in the defeat was Dave Yakopec, who allowed only three runs while striking out five.
Kyle Petty reached base three times in the game for the Butler Blue Sox. He singled in the first and third innings.
Joe Candelmo improved to 1-0 on the year by picking up the win for the West Virginia Miners. He allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Candelmo struck out five, walked six and gave up six hits.
Yakopec (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher.
