Carlos Mendez brought home the winning run to give the Southern Illinois Miners (46-32) the lead in the sixth inning, as the Southern Illinois Miners hung on to beat the Gateway Grizzlies (45-33) 4-2 on Sunday.

With the score tied at one in the sixth inning, Mendez came to the plate and homered, bringing home Javier Herrera and Chad Maddox.

Mendez racked up three RBIs on one hit for the Southern Illinois Miners. He homered in the sixth inning.

The Southern Illinois Miners held off the Gateway Grizzlies, as the Gateway Grizzlies were unable to overcome a three-run sixth inning deficit.

The Gateway Grizzlies scored one run in the ninth on a groundout by Landon Hernandez. Still, the Gateway Grizzlies couldn't catch the Southern Illinois Miners.

Daniel Calhoun's nine strikeouts were enough to push the Southern Illinois Miners past the Gateway Grizzlies. Calhoun allowed one earned run, five hits and one walk over seven innings.

Brett Zawacki (1-2) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just five innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed three runs.
