Charlie White was cold coming off the bench, but White warmed up quickly as White stroked a key pinch-hit double in the three to lead the Newport Gulls (31-10) to a 3-0 win over the New Bedford Bay Sox (25-17) on Wednesday at Cardines Field.
With the game scoreless in the third inning White came to the plate and doubled.
Steve Anderson reached base three times. He scored two runs and had one RBI. He homered in the fourth inning and singled in the eighth inning.
The New Bedford Bay Sox had no answer for Ryan Pennell, who kept runners off the basepaths in his appearance. Pennell held the New Bedford Bay Sox hitless over 2 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two.
Frank Vilacha couldn't get it done on the bump for the New Bedford Bay Sox, taking a loss. He lasted just six innings, walked five, struck out six, and allowed three runs.
