Derner allowed two hits, one walk and struck out eight.
Evan King was hot from the plate for the New Bedford Bay Sox. King went 2-2 and scored one run. He singled in the third and fifth innings.
A bright spot for the Newport Gulls in the defeat was Adam Ravenelle, who allowed only two runs while striking out 11.
