Anthony Hajjar drove in the go-ahead run to give the Sanford Mainers (11-18) the lead in the sixth inning, as the Sanford Mainers hung on to beat the Newport Gulls (24-9) 2-1 on Saturday.
Jordan Hagel to start the sixth. He then went from second to third. Finally, Hajjar came to the plate with the Sanford Mainers trailing by one in the sixth inning, and singled, scoring Hagel.Steven Rice pitched lights out for the Sanford Mainers. Rice held the Newport Gulls hitless over three innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five.
John Hochstatter was effective even in defeat, mowing down eight the Sanford Mainers batters and allowing two runs.
Jerry Ferris improved to 1-1 on the year by picking up the win for the Sanford Mainers. He allowed one run over six innings. Ferris struck out four, walked two and gave up four hits.
Hochstatter (2-1) took the loss for the Newport Gulls.
