The Grand Lake Mariners (14-10) came out firing, but couldn't hang on to the lead, ending up on the losing side of an 8-5 ballgame against the Lake Erie Monarchs (9-15) on Friday at Wally Post Field.

While the Grand Lake Mariners led until the eighth inning, the Lake Erie Monarchs worked their way back and took the lead on a three-run home run by Ross Haffey.

Haffey racked up three RBIs on one hit for the Lake Erie Monarchs. He homered in the eighth inning.

The Grand Lake Mariners' lineup had no answer for Caleb Smith. Smith gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two during his 2 1/3 innings of work.

Matthew Berler racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Grand Lake Mariners. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the third inning.

Matt McConnell (2-1) took the loss for the Grand Lake Mariners. He lasted just one-third of an inning, walked none, struck out none, and allowed three runs.
