Second-inning rally sparks blowout win for the Southern Illinois Miners, 13-3

The Southern Illinois Miners (55-36) took down the Normal CornBelters 13-3 on Friday at Rent One Park, Marion, IL after slamming the Normal CornBelters (48-42) with seven runs in the second inning.

The Southern Illinois Miners scored in the second on an RBI single by Frank Martinez, a two-run double by Aaron Gates, a two-run home run by Chris Burke, and a two-run home run by Steve Marino.

Gates racked up three RBIs on three hits for the Southern Illinois Miners.

The Normal CornBelters' lineup had no answer for James Woods. The Normal CornBelters managed just one hit off of Woods, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two during his two innings of work.

The Normal CornBelters' Richard Lucas was perfect at the dish, going 3-3. He singled in the third, sixth, and eighth innings.

Matt Bywater recorded his eighth win of the year for the Southern Illinois Miners. He allowed three runs over six innings. Bywater struck out five, walked six and gave up four hits.

Mike Devine (2-2) took the loss for the Normal CornBelters. He allowed nine runs in 1 2/3 innings, walked one and struck out three.

The Southern Illinois Miners pounded the Normal CornBelters pitching, as six hitters combined for 13 hits, 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored.
