The Gateway Grizzlies get on top of the Southern Illinois Miners early but can't hang on in 4-1 loss

The Gateway Grizzlies (36-20) jumped out to an early lead, but were unable to hold on and lost 4-1 to the Southern Illinois Miners (32-23) on Monday.

While the Gateway Grizzlies led until the eighth inning, the Southern Illinois Miners worked their way back and took the lead on a two-run double by Forrest Smith.

The Southern Illinois Miners' Steve Marino was perfect at the dish, going 3-3. He singled in the second, fourth, and sixth innings.

Rick Teasley pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run, eight hits and no walks while striking out three.

Despite the loss, the Gateway Grizzlies' Tyler Thompson dominated the Southern Illinois Miners' batters, giving up zero runs and striking out five.

James Bierlein recorded his second win of the year for the Southern Illinois Miners. Bierlein struck out none, walked none and gave up no hits.

Luke Westphal (1-3) took the loss for the Gateway Grizzlies. He lasted just one inning, walked two, struck out two, and allowed two runs.
