Andrew Brodbeck was cold coming off the bench, but Brodbeck warmed up quickly as Brodbeck stroked a key pinch-hit single in the three to lead the Sanford River Rats (1-0) to an 8-3 win over the Orlando Monarchs (0-1) on Saturday at Tinker Field.
With Brodbeck came to the plate and singled.
Brodbeck reached base four times.
Keith Curcio racked up three RBIs on three hits for the Sanford River Rats. He singled in the third and fifth innings and tripled in the eighth inning.
Jason Boyer had an impressive outing against the Orlando Monarchs' lineup. The Orlando Monarchs managed just one hit off of Boyer, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two during his 2 2/3 innings of work.
Kyle Bird recorded his first win of the year for the Sanford River Rats. He allowed three runs over five innings. Bird struck out two, walked seven and gave up four hits.
Drew Gay ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings, walked three, struck out six, and allowed four runs.
