Elliott's goals lift Whitby to 4-1 victory over Markham

The Whitby Fury relied on the scoring touch of Steven Elliott, who netted two goals, to beat the Markham Royals, 4-1.

Elliott found the back of the net 6:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby and again while 13:48 into the first to make the score 2-0 Whitby.

The win gave Whitby a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

The Fury were led by goalie Daniel Mannella, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. Despite the solid performance, Mannella will actually see his goals against average rise, as it stood at 1.0 entering the contest.

Whitby also got points from Zack Fisher, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Scott Kirton also scored for Whitby. More assists for Whitby came via Ryan Porter, Rylee McKinnon, and Ryan Taylor, who contributed one each and Alex Boudreau and Kennedy Duguid, who each chipped in two.

Markham was led by Tyson Bruce, who scored the team's only goal. Bruce scored on the power play 18:00 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Whitby. The Royals had gotten the advantage when Whitby's McKinnon was sent off for cross checking. Lucas Condotta assisted on the tally.

The Fury incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Markham's starting goalie, Scott Smith, made eight saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Marcus Semiao, who stopped 16 shots. The Royals incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
