Orangeville hangs on, beats Oakville 3-1

Lucas Smilsky gave the Orangeville Flyers the lead in the first period, and the Oakville Blades was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 3-1.

A goal 3:49 into the first period by Smilsky proved to be the game winner, and powered Orangeville to the victory. The Flyers had gotten the advantage when Oakville's Tyler Rollo was sent off for goalie interference. Ian Nichols picked up the assist.

The win gave Orangeville a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

The Flyers were led by goalie Wyatt Pickrell, who finished with 41 saves while allowing one goal. Despite the solid performance, Pickrell will actually see his goals against average rise, as it stood at 1.0 entering the contest.

The Blades' power play was ineffective against Orangeville's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Flyers stifled Oakville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

James McLaughlin also scored for Orangeville. More assists for Orangeville came via Connor Stack, Derek Topatigh, and Aleks Rapp, who contributed one each.

The Blades forced Orangeville goalie Pickrell to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. Oakville's power play was punchless, and failed to score a single goal despite having 12 power play opportunities.

The Blades were led by Jackson Bales, who scored the team's only goal. Bales scored 12:04 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Orangeville. Josh Kosack assisted on the tally.

The Flyers incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Oakville's Daniel Mannella stopped 22 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Blades incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For Oakville, Ryan Burns was ejected from the game.
