Cobourg survives Whitby comeback, wins 4-3

The Whitby Fury tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Cobourg Cougars would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

Cobourg made the score 4-1 on a goal by Connor Armour at 18:05 in the second period, and Whitby got as close as 4-3 when Nik Coric scored 15:51 into the third period.

After the loss made the series score 3-0 in the best of seven series, the Fury face elimination next time out.

The Cougars kept Whitby's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tyler Feaver made 32 saves on 36 shots. Cobourg struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Fury to score three power play goals on four chances.

The Cougars were helped by Matt Carroll, who racked up three goals. Cobourg also got points from Armour, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Taylor Gauld, who had three and Ryan OGrady and Connor Hogg, who each chipped in one.

Whitby also got a goal from Scott Kirton as well. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Ryan Kirkup, Jonathan OHara, Jeremy Wu, Justin Brand, and Daniel Robertson, who contributed one each.

Stefano Durante recorded 23 saves for Cobourg. The Cougars totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Cobourg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Theo Lewis was ejected from the game. Whitby incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
