Cobourg downs Whitby in overtime, 4-3 (OT)Cobourg Community Centre Wed, Feb 25, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Cobourg Cougars' Liam Grande scored 3:30 into overtime to beat the Whitby Fury, 4-3 (OT). The win gave Cobourg a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. The Cougars got the win thanks to a great game by Grande, who had two goals and one assist. Grande scored the first of his two goals at 15:16 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Alex Riche assisted on the tally. Grande's next tally made the score 4-3 Cobourg with 16:30 left in overtime. Connor Armour picked up the assist. Cobourg put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Whitby to score on any of its three power plays. The Cougars kept the Fury's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tyler Feaver made 33 saves on 37 shots. Others who scored for Cobourg included Mitchell Gibson and Connor Hogg, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Sam Dunn and Taylor Gauld, who each chipped in one. Cobourg was unable to stop Whitby from sending pucks towards the net, and the Fury eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. Whitby was led by Kevin Dimagno, who racked up two goals. Dimagno scored the first of his two goals at 1:20 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. Scott Kirton assisted on the tally. Dimagno's next tally made the score 2-2 with 17:52 left in the third period. Luke Keenan picked up the assist. Whitby also got a goal from Ryan Kirkup as well. In addition, Whitby received assists from Justin Brand, who had one. Stefano Durante made 28 saves for the Cougars on 31 shots. Cobourg incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Fury incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Whitby ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Austin Fischer was ejected from the game.
