Missoula Maulers holds on for 6-4 win against Butte Cobras

Butte Cobras tried its best to erase a three-goal deficit, but Missoula Maulers would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-4.

A goal by Sawyer Jacobson put Missoula Maulers up 6-3 in the third period, but Butte Cobras pulled to within two on Bogdan Shleev's tally 15:54 into the third period.

With three goals and two assists between them, Austin Azzinnaro and Corey Schafer teamed up to power Missoula Maulers' offense. Azzinnaro racked up two goals and Schafer also added one goal and two assists.

Missoula Maulers forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 13 minors and two majors for 56 minutes in penalty time. Missoula Maulers surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Missoula Maulers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in 11 chances. Butte Cobras was unable to stop Missoula Maulers from sending pucks towards the net, and Missoula Maulers eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. Missoula Maulers' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Missoula Maulers additionally got points from Jacobson, who also registered one goal and one assist and Schafer, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Missoula Maulers also had goals scored by Alex Shalamov and Tyler Lodin, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Missoula Maulers were Wyatt Mathews, Henrik Ekestahl, Tanner Todd, Andrei Shebelbain, Damon Hanson, and Matt Chamberlain, who contributed one each.

Butte Cobras was often in penalty trouble, totaling 13 minors and two majors for 76 minutes in penalty time. Butte Cobras had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Butte Cobras was led by Anton Zimmer, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Zimmer scored the first of his two goals at 8:56 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Missoula Maulers. Johan Lovestrom picked up the assist. Zimmer's next tally made the score 4-3 Missoula Maulers with 1:43 left in the second period. Kevin Philbin assisted on the tally. Butte Cobras also got points from Anton Bokull, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Butte Cobras received assists from Clinton Hildebrand, Tyler Onstott, and Zach Steuck, who each chipped in one.

Missoula Maulers' Aron Holmgren stopped 18 shots out of the 22 that he faced. Missoula Maulers registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For Missoula Maulers, Lodin was ejected from the game. Reed Kinsey rejected 39 shots on goal for Butte Cobras. For Butte Cobras, BENCH and Steuck were ejected from the contest.
