Rodgers' goals lift St. Catharines to 4-1 victory over Welland

The St. Catharines Falcons relied on the scoring touch of Mark Rodgers, who netted two goals, to beat the Welland Jr. Canadians, 4-1.

Rodgers scored at 8:16 into the second period to make the score 1-1 and again while 4:39 into the third to make the score 2-1 St. Catharines.

The win by St. Catharines clinched the best of seven series at 4-0.

Welland was stymied by the Falcons' netminder Jonathon D Ilario, who stopped 30 shots during the victory.

St. Catharines forced the Jr. Canadians goalie Jeffrey Heartwell to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

St. Catharines also had goals scored by Kyle Woodhouse and Nigel Slade, who each put in one. In addition, St. Catharines received assists from Tyler Jackson, who had two and Mitch Bursey, Cam Blakely, Brennan Feasey, and Tyler Hildebrant, who contributed one each.

Welland's offense rang up 31 shots on the Falcons' net.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Jimmy Sheehan, who scored the team's only goal. Sheehan scored on the power play 15:28 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland. Welland earned a power play opportunity when D Ilario was put in the box for tripping. Brayden Stortz picked up the assist.

St. Catharines incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Heartwell rejected 40 shots on goal for the Jr. Canadians. Welland incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
