The St. Catharines Falcons' Mark Rodgers scored 3:32 into overtime to beat the Welland Jr. Canadians, 3-2 (OT). The win gave St. Catharines a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. The Falcons were sparked by Rodgers, who tallied one goal. St. Catharines put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Welland to score on any of its three power plays. The Falcons kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeffrey Heartwell made 47 saves on 50 shots. St. Catharines also got points from Brennan Feasey, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Aaron Taylor also scored for St. Catharines. In addition, St. Catharines received assists from Dillan Walker, who had two. Welland stifled St. Catharines' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Falcons were unable to stop the Jr. Canadians from sending pucks towards the net, and Welland eventually piled up 44 shots on goal. The Jr. Canadians were helped by Matthew Mateljan, who had one goal. Mateljan scored 3:48 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Jack Fitzgerald picked up the assist. Welland also got a goal from Jason Lacroix as well. More assists for Welland came via Adam Mataya and Bryan Komasara, who contributed one each. Knick Dawe rejected 42 shots on goal for St. Catharines. The Falcons incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors. Welland incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. |
