Thorold beats Caledonia 3-2 after comeback scare

The Caledonia Corvairs tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Thorold Blackhawks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

A goal by Owen Sobchak put Thorold up 3-1 in the second period, but Caledonia pulled to within one on Cosimo Fontana's tally 6:39 into the third period.

The win gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Sobchak had a great game for Thorold, netting two goals.

The Blackhawks stifled the Corvairs' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Thorold's offense rang up 33 shots on Caledonia's net.

Thorold also got points from Zach McQuade, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Thorold came via Matt Pizzo, Liam VanBuren, Drake Hart, Joe Mitchell, and Carl Greco, who each chipped in one.

The Corvairs kept the Blackhawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Brendan Polasek made 41 saves on 43 shots.

Caledonia was helped by Matt Quilty, who finished with one goal. Quilty scored 10:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Caledonia. Jeffrey Malott provided the assist. In addition, Caledonia received assists from Jordan Peacock, Connor Murphy, and Mitch Brown, who contributed one each.

Thorold incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Corvairs' Colin Furlong stopped 30 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Caledonia incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
