Waterloo survives Elmira comeback, wins 3-1

The Waterloo Siskins came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Elmira Sugar Kings, but did just enough to escape with a 3-1 victory.

Waterloo led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Siskins' Danny Hanlon scored short handed at 16:31 in the second period to put Waterloo up 3-0.

After the loss made the series score 2-3 in the best of seven series, Elmira faces elimination next time out.

The Siskins were led by Nick Hirst, who tallied one goal. Hirst scored 4:56 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Waterloo. Luke Gazzola assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:50 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Waterloo also got a goal from Christian Mroczkowski as well. More assists for Waterloo came via Matt Martin, Evan Kearns, and Evan Buehler, who contributed one each.

The Sugar Kings were led by David Savery, who scored the team's only goal. Savery scored on the power play 16:50 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Waterloo. Elmira had gained a power play chance when Eric Cimino was whistled for delay of game. Cass Frey picked up the assist.

Waterloo's Leo Lazarev stopped 23 shots out of the 24 that he faced. The Siskins totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 1-for-8 on the power play. Team's Martin and Gazzola were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Jonathan Reinhart rejected 23 shots on goal for the Sugar Kings. Elmira totaled 39 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. The Sugar Kings ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cash Seraphim was ejected from the game.
