Welland wins tough contest against Niagara Falls, 4-3

The Welland Jr. Canadians and the Niagara Falls Canucks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Welland made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-3.

The Jr. Canadians gained the winning advantage on a goal by Jason Lacroix 17:12 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

The win by Welland clinched the best of seven series at 4-2.

The Jr. Canadians' penalty kill excelled, as Welland gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Lacroix, who grabbed one goal and one assist.

Welland stifled Niagara Falls' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Canadians kept the Canucks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Emerson Verrier made 33 saves on 37 shots.

Welland also had goals scored by Cole McKnight, Jack Fitzgerald, and Gabe Ruggi, who each put in one. More assists for Welland came via Adam Mataya, Matthew Mateljan, Brayden Stortz, and Tyler Stranges, who contributed one a piece.

Niagara Falls made Welland's goalies to work without much rest, totaling 36 shots and forcing 33 saves. Chris Janzen made 11 stops and Jeffrey Heartwell made 22.

The Canucks were helped by Cole Langan, who racked up one goal. Langan scored 5:54 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Chris Harpur assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Niagara Falls included Tory McLean and Johnny Curran, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Austin Wright and Brooker Muir, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Canadians incurred 38 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Welland ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Christian DiFonzo was ejected from the game. Niagara Falls ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. For the Canucks, Frank Nemeth was ejected from the game.
