Sarnia beats London 5-4 as Kestner gets hat trick

Josh Kestner netted a hat trick to lead the Sarnia Legionnaires over the London Nationals, 5-4.

Kestner got on the scoresheet 14:52 into the first period. He then added goals at 18:20 into the first and at 16:42 into the third.

The win moved Sarnia to down 2-1 in the best of seven series.

The Legionnaires led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Sarnia's Thomas Moxley's scored at 1:10 in the second period to put the Legionnaires up 3-0.

London was unable to stop Sarnia from sending pucks towards the net, and the Legionnaires eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Sarnia also got a goal from Davis Boyer as well. Other players who recorded assists for Sarnia were Jay Clarke, Nathan Mater, and Tyler Prong, who contributed two a piece.

The Nationals' offense rang up 35 shots on Sarnia's net. London's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

The Nationals were led by Mike Whaley, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Whaley scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:14 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Sarnia. A roughing penalty on Clarke had put London on the power play. Derek Todosichuk picked up the assist. Whaley's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 8:56 left in the third period. Todosichuk provided the assist. Others who scored for London included Matt Fuller and Ryan Shipley, who each put in one. In addition, London received assists from Matt Wildman, who had two and Paul Hopkins and Jeff Bauer, who each chipped in one.

Hunter Johnson recorded 31 saves for the Legionnaires. Sarnia incurred 36 minutes in penalty time with 13 minors. The Nationals' Jacob Riley stopped 35 shots out of the 40 that he faced. London incurred 36 minutes in penalty time with 13 minors. For the Nationals, Tristen Elie was ejected from the game.
