Leamington uses big second period to beat St. Marys, 5-0

The St. Marys Lincolns was within striking distance after one period, but the Leamington Flyers put the pedal down in the second en route to a 5-0 victory.

The win gave Leamington a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Jacob McGhee had two goals to lead the Flyers to victory. McGhee found the back of the net on the power play 5:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Leamington and again while 3:55 into the second to make the score 2-0 Leamington.

Leamington was boosted by Trevor Wheaton, who turned in a shutout with 25 saves. The solid play of Wheaton will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 0.95.

The Flyers stifled St. Marys' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Lincolns were unable to stop Leamington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. Leamington got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Leamington additionally got points from Kyle Quick, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Leamington included Alex Friesen and Mitchell Amante, who each put in one. In addition, Leamington received assists from Alex Seguin, Colin Moore, Nathan Opblinger, and Daniel Robertson, who contributed one a piece and David Dalby and Dylan Seguin, who each chipped in two.

The Flyers incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Andrew Masters rejected 35 shots on goal for St. Marys. The Lincolns incurred 34 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
