The New Hamburg Firebirds tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Simcoe Storm held on for a 5-3 victory. A goal by Zack Van Louwe put Simcoe up 5-2 in the third period, but New Hamburg pulled to within two on Sean Kienapple's tally 15:33 into the third period. The win gave the Storm a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. Merritt Crumback was all over the ice for Simcoe, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win. Crumback scored on the power play 3:51 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Simcoe. The Storm had taken the advantage when the Firebirds' Andrew Boer got sent off for slashing. Braedan Walker picked up the assist. New Hamburg was unable to stop Simcoe from sending pucks towards the net, and the Storm eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. Simcoe took advantage of the Firebirds' penalties, tallying four goals off of four power play opportunities. Simcoe additionally got points from Van Louwe, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Walker, who also tallied one goal and two assists, and Kennan Hall, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Simcoe also got a goal from Conner Robinson as well. More assists for Simcoe came via Clayton Chalmers, who had one. New Hamburg forced the Storm goalie Alex Gegeny to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots. The Firebirds were helped by Connor Voigt, who finished with one goal. Voigt scored on the power play 17:46 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Simcoe. New Hamburg had gained a power play chance when Alex Gamble was whistled for slashing. Kyle Mohr assisted on the tally. Sam Murray also scored for New Hamburg. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Mike DAloisio, Sean Hergott, and Nick Pope, who each chipped in one. Simcoe's Gegeny stopped 31 shots out of the 34 that he faced. The Storm incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Eric Peicheff made 26 saves for the Firebirds on 31 shots. New Hamburg incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. |
