Simcoe survives Aylmer comeback, wins 3-2

The Aylmer Spitfires tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Simcoe Storm would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

Simcoe made the score 3-1 on a goal by Jamie Kelly at 2:58 in the third period, and Aylmer got as close as 3-2 when Ben Shaw scored 6:58 into the third period.

After the loss made the series score 2-3 in the best of seven series, the Spitfires face elimination next time out.

The Storm got the win on the strength of a great game by Kelly, who had two goals and one assist. Kelly scored the first of his two goals at 14:39 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Simcoe. Braden Roberts assisted on the tally. Kelly's next tally made the score Simcoe with 17:02 left in the third period.

Aylmer was unable to stop Simcoe from sending pucks towards the net, and the Storm eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Simcoe also got points from Roberts, who also registered one goal and one assist.

The Spitfires forced Simcoe goalie Alex Gegeny to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Aylmer was helped by Cody Underhill, who had one goal. Underhill scored on the power play 14:18 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Spitfires earned a power play opportunity when Brett Lewis was put in the box for high sticking. Shaw provided the assist. Aylmer additionally got points from Shaw, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Aylmer came via Mike Crawford, who had one.

Alex Gegeny made 30 saves for the Storm on 32 shots. Simcoe incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Lucas Easterbrook rejected 33 shots on goal for Aylmer. The Spitfires totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Aylmer ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Todd Laurindo was ejected from the game.
