Aylmer uses early goal to top Simcoe, 3-1

The Aylmer Spitfires beat the Simcoe Storm, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Aylmer took over the lead for good with a goal by Rhys Thornton at 14:30 in the first period. Mark Edmonds picked up the assist.

The win gave the Spitfires a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Simcoe was stymied by Aylmer netminder Lucas Easterbrook, who stopped 30 shots during the victory. Easterbrook certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.5 entering the contest.

The Spitfires got the win thanks to a great game by Eric Nemeth, who had one goal and two assists. Nemeth scored 15:44 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Aylmer. Todd Laurindo assisted on the tally.

Aylmer additionally got points from Thornton, who also registered one goal and one assist. Aylmer also got a goal from Scott Walker as well.

The Storm excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Simcoe forced Aylmer goalie Easterbrook to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

The Storm were led by Kennan Hall, who scored the team's only goal. Hall scored on the power play 55 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Simcoe. Clayton Chalmers provided the assist.

The Spitfires ended with 48 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and two majors. For Aylmer, Mitch Roloson and Ben Shaw were ejected from the contest. Simcoe's Alex Gegeny stopped 23 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Storm totaled 31 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-10 on the power play. Simcoe ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jamie Kelly was ejected from the game.
