Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Hampton Roads Whalers defeated Tampa Juniors in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO). The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams. Tampa Juniors' shootout goal was scored by Jared Goudreau. Hampton Roads Whalers' other shootout goal was scored by Scott Cornfield.Hampton Roads Whalers was led by Cornfield, who racked up one goal. Cornfield scored 12:17 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Alexander Brissette picked up the assist. In the losing effort, Tampa Juniors was sparked by Logan Garst, who registered two goals. Garst scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 12:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tampa Juniors. An elbowing penalty on Christopher Haynes had put Tampa Juniors on the power play. Paul Lochner assisted on the tally. Garst's next tally on the power play made the score 3-3 with 5:20 left in the second period. Tommy Whiteley picked up the assist. Hampton Roads Whalers also got a goal from Nicholas Michels as well. In addition, Hampton Roads Whalers received assists from Matthew Zendejas, Taylor Paasch, Joshua Malts, and Clayton Kanemitsu, who each chipped in one. Tampa Juniors put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Hampton Roads Whalers to score on any of its five power plays. Goudreau also scored for Tampa Juniors. Brett Kilar rejected 25 shots on goal for Hampton Roads Whalers. Hampton Roads Whalers incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
