Space Coast Hurricanes squeaks by Hampton Roads Whalers, 5-3

Space Coast Hurricanes gutted out a close 5-3 win against Hampton Roads Whalers.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Colby Stewart at 10:50 of the second period.

Mikkel Joehnk had a great game for Space Coast Hurricanes, netting two goals. Joehnk found the back of the net 4:50 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and again while 18:47 into the second to make the score 4-2 Space Coast Hurricanes.

Space Coast Hurricanes' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Hampton Roads Whalers power plays.

Space Coast Hurricanes also got points from Jamie Chilcott, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Clay Plyler also scored for Space Coast Hurricanes. More assists for Space Coast Hurricanes came via Chase Harris and Andrew Bathgate, who each chipped in one and Crissostomos Villarreal, Griffin Rogers, and Jack Musil, who contributed two a piece.

Hampton Roads Whalers forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. Hampton Roads Whalers had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Hampton Roads Whalers was led by Matthew Zendejas, who registered two goals. Zendejas scored the first of his two goals at 12:29 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Hampton Roads Whalers. Alexander Brissette picked up the assist. Zendejas' next tally made the score 2-1 Hampton Roads Whalers with 19:03 left in the second period. Scott Cornfield assisted on the tally. Hampton Roads Whalers also got a goal from Christopher Haynes as well. Other players who recorded assists for Hampton Roads Whalers were Cameron Snyder, who had two and William Naber and Clayton Kanemitsu, who each chipped in one.

Parker Bonis made 25 saves for Space Coast Hurricanes on 28 shots. Space Coast Hurricanes incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Blake Scott rejected 14 shots on goal for Hampton Roads Whalers. For Hampton Roads Whalers, Nicholas Michels was ejected from the game.
