Hagersville beats Burford 7-6 after comeback scare

The Burford Bulldogs tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Hagersville Hawks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 7-6.

Hagersville made the score 6-3 on a goal by Rob Clause at 11:48 in the second period, and Burford got as close as 6-5 when Kyle Chaney scored 2:28 into the third period.

Derek Medeiros had two goals and one assist to lead the Hawks. Medeiros scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:25 into the second period to make the score 5-3 Hagersville. Hagersville had gained a power play chance when Cale Burbridge was whistled for elbowing. Cole Martin provided the assist. Medeiros' next tally on the power play made the score 7-6 Hagersville with 1:15 left in the third period.

The Hawks' offense rang up 38 shots on the Bulldogs' net. Hagersville outdid its season average for goals scored. The Hawks average 4.9 goals per game. Hagersville cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Hagersville also got points from Nick Halliday, who also had one goal and one assist and Jesse Ross, who also registered one goal and one assist. Kyle Phibbs also scored for Hagersville. Other players who recorded assists for Hagersville were Deacan Krause and Jacob Erwin, who contributed one a piece and Eric Drehmer, Mitch Green, and Kyle Parsons, who each chipped in two.

The Hawks were unable to stop Burford from sending pucks towards the net, and the Bulldogs eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Burford took advantage of Hagersville's penalties, tallying three goals off of five power play opportunities.

The Bulldogs were led by Guy Polillo, who tallied one goal and three assists. Polillo scored 17:04 into the second period to make the score 6-4 Hagersville. Burford additionally got points from Pat Bates, who also finished with one goal and two assists, JJ Haroland, who also grabbed two goals and one assist, and Adam Harris, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Burford received assists from Andrew Schunk and Tyler MacLaughlin, who contributed one a piece.

Trevor Fleming made 26 saves for the Hawks on 32 shots. Hagersville ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Nate Ferris was ejected from the game. Don Davis rejected 31 shots on goal for Burford. The Bulldogs incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
