Port Stanley wins tough contest against Thamesford, 5-3

The Port Stanley Sailors gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Thamesford Trojans.

Port Stanley gained the winning advantage on a goal by Dan Gordon 3:40 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

With three goals and one assist between them, Tanner Turley and Gordon teamed up to power the Sailors' offense. Turley tallied two goals and one assist and Gordon also added one goal.

Port Stanley's penalty kill excelled, as the Sailors gave up zero goals despite allowing 17 power plays.

The Port Stanley penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 16 minors and one major for 57 minutes in penalty time. The Sailors surpassed its season average of 29.0 penalty minutes per game. Port Stanley stifled Thamesford's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Trojans were unable to stop the Sailors from sending pucks towards the net, and Port Stanley eventually piled up 39 shots on goal.

Port Stanley also got a goal from Zak Jukna as well. In addition, Port Stanley received assists from Taylor Schram and Tyson Corkum, who each chipped in one.

Thamesford forced the Sailors goalie Brandon Garner to work between the pipes, taking 59 shots. The Trojans could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 48 minutes in penalties during the game.

Thamesford was helped by Adam Levine, who finished with two goals. Levine scored the first of his two goals at 6:26 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Thamesford. Kyle Walker picked up the assist. Levine's next tally made the score 3-2 Thamesford with 12:24 left in the second period. Beau Diloreto provided the assist. Thamesford additionally got points from Walker, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Thamesford came via Dylan Salter, Fabio Galante, and Andrew McLennan, who contributed one a piece.

Port Stanley's Garner stopped 56 shots out of the 59 that he faced. The Sailors registered two goals on 16 power play opportunities. For Port Stanley, Corkum and Mark Brisson were ejected from the contest. James Champagne made 34 saves for the Trojans on 39 shots. Thamesford ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Levine was ejected from the game.
