Wellesley beats Ayr 4-3 after comeback scare

The Wellesley Applejacks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Ayr Centennials on the way to a 4-3 win.

Wellesley took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have Ayr storm back on a Jimmy Roy goal 17:37 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Applejacks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Centennials to score on any of their five power plays. Wellesley forced Ayr goalie Mitch Figueirdo to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

The Applejacks were helped by Reid Denstedt, who racked up three goals. Taylor Doering also scored for Wellesley. More assists for Wellesley came via Jake Ariss, who had one, Brett MacDonald, who had three, and Corey Way, who had four.

The Centennials did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Ayr averages 5.5 goals per game. The Centennials' offense rang up 48 shots on Wellesley's net.

Ayr was led by Brady Wheelans, who registered one goal and one assist. Wheelans scored 2:57 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Ayr. Ben Poort provided the assist. Ayr also got a goal from Brandon Christopher as well. Other players who recorded assists for Ayr were Jordan Eby and Brett Gibson, who contributed one a piece.

Josh Heer rejected 45 shots on goal for the Applejacks. Wellesley incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Centennials' Figueirdo stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Ayr incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
